He was Syeikh Abd as-Shamad ibn Abdurrahman al-Palimbani. He was sayyid (offspring from Sanaa, Yemen) and was born 1116 H/ 1704 at Palembang, Sumatera. He was died in Haramain at 1203 H/1789 after completing his opus named by Hidayat al-Salikin. His opus are Nashihah al-Muslimin wa Tadzkirah al-Mu’minin fi Fadhail al-Jihad fi Sabilillah wa Karamah al-Mujahidin fi Sabilillah, Zuhrah al-Murid fi Bayan Kalimah al-Tauhid, Tuhfah al-Raghibin fi Bayan Haqiqah Iman al-Mu’minin wa Ma Yufsiduh fi Riddah al-Murtaddin, al-Urwah al-Wutsqa wa Silsilah uli al-Tuqa, Ratib Abd al-Shamad, Zad al-Muttaqin fi Tauhid Rabb ‘Alamin, Sayr al-Salikin ila Rabb al-Alamin.
His study was started from his father, Syeikh Abd al-Rahman, a qadhi from Palembang in Kedah Sultanate. After that, he continued his journey to another Islam region, such as Haramin, Yemen, and Marocco.
Among his teachers were Syeikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Sammani, Syeikh Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Azis al-Maghribi, Syeikh Muhammad ibn Sulaiman al-Kurdi, Syeikh Ibrahim al-Rais, Syeikh Muhammad Murad, Syeikh Muhammad al-Jauhari, Syeikh Athaillah ibn Mashri, Syeikh Ahmad ibn Abd al-Mun’im al-Damanhuri.
With his knowledge, he decided to be teacher in Haramain, and to be writer here. His reputation was famous among ulama there. He had students that became ulama, Syeikh Wajihuddin Abdurrahman al-Ahdal and Syeikh Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Abdul Razak al-Husaini al-Zabidi or was famous by Sayyid al-Imam Murtadha.
Syeikh Wajihuddin Abdurrahman al-Ahdal is a mufti in Zabid region, Yemen. His important opus was al-Nafs al-Yamani wa al-Ruh al-Rayhani. In this opus, al-Palimbani was written in third level (thobaqot).
Sayyid al-Imam Murtadha, he was famous as mujaddid (reformer) in 12th century. His important opus was Ittihaf al-Sadah al-Muttaqin Syarh Ihya Ulumiddin for Imam Ghazali. Java student who learned from him was Kyai Abdul Manan al-Termasi (Mas Bagus Sudarso), the grandfather of Syeikh Mahfudz al-Termasi.
